Working with Words

This seminar is a one day workshop designed to help students beginning in 2nd grade build vocabulary and strategies necessary to learn new words.  Teachers will learn activities to use in their classroom and strategies to teach their students so they will be interested in learning new words and using new words in their daily conversations and writing.  Through the use of the student word books, the children add new words to their vocabulary and begin to use them, making them part of their own personal word bank. By taking ownership, using the words in speaking and writing,  the students vocabularies begin to develop.

In Other Words is a student word book developed by Marsha and her partner teacher, Elizabeth Murray. It is designed to be used in elementary schools as a spelling tool as well as a way to develop spelling and vocabulary.  It contains over 500 frequently used words and has space to add new words, short definitions, or sketches to help students learn and use the words.  It is not designed to replace word walls or spelling programs.  It will enhance your current writing workshop, word studies, and spelling program. The student word book is also an excellent tool for older ESL or Bilingual students and those with special needs.
