I’ll be the first to say that students won’t just start reading. It takes a well trained teacher and lots of hard work to teach anyone to read. However, if we want our students to be the best readers possible, they need to read and read a lot. As teachers I think it is very hard for us to understand that learning to read may be the most difficult thing some people ever do. That’s because for most of us, learning to read just wasn’t that hard. And most educators like to read. But it is true, for kids who struggle to learn to read, it is just not fun, it is very hard work and very difficult for them. So it becomes a struggle to get them to read independently. They need to practice the reading skills they are learning from their teachers by reading a large amount of text. Today is a new beginning. Not just a new day and a new sunrise—but a new endeavor—the beginning of my “blog”. A year ago I didn’t even know what a blog was—and I considered myself pretty savvy technologically! In 1989, I transferred to an elementary magnet school whose magnet was technology. At the time, all I knew about computers was that the red switch turned it on and I could put this floppy disk in and the kids could play games that would practice their skills in spelling or math.
